Well, that was a ride.

Rob @ 2:20 AM

Just got back from "Star Wars III." No big spoilers follow, just some sweeping observations and details you know unless you switched off the Internet for the past year..:

The good:

  • The battles kicked ass, especially the lightsaber duels.
  • The droids rocked, especially Artoo (who has always been one of my favorites.)
  • When the Vader mask went on, and the first breath was heard, a chill went through the theater.
  • Great FX work all around.
  • They shut Jar Jar the hell hell up up.
  • There was a clone trooper commander named Cody. Commander Cody!!! If you miss the ref, you're no MSTie.
  • Samuel L. Jackson. I hate "Pulp Fiction," but I'm now prepared to accept him as a bad motherfucker.
  • Ewan MacGregor has come far since his episode I days of reacting to everything with a vaguely thoughtful frown.
  • Yoda! A rare case in which the CG creation works better than the original puppet. Almost makes up for the extremely lame "Special Edition" CG Jabba.
  • Ian McDiarmid. Emperor. Brrrr!!!

The bad:

  • Hayden Christensen. He is only good at playing a bitchy asshole. Darth Vader should come from something deeper than a whiny spoiled child.
  • Natalie Portman majorly failed a saving throw or something, because she has apparently lost most of her meager acting skills since the last one. When someone is constantly outperformed by their endless supply of bad hairpieces, there is a problem. Maybe she's taking lessons from Hayden, or a small plank of particle board.
  • Lucas still can't write meaningful dialogue for crap.
  • They need to name a grievously evil general, and they can't do better than "General Greivous?" That's even sillier than the insidious Darth Sidious. Are they perhaps related to Major Asshole?
  • Poor Leia has to be raised by ("Switch") Jimmy Smits. Is there no deeper level of Hell?
  • James Earl Jones completely forgot how to do a good Vader voice.
  • Threepio was useless, serving only as an all-purpose bitch-bot.
  • Too much fanwank. Putting Chewie in there was so damn cheap. I also wish they hadn't felt the need to actually portray how and where the Emperor went from normal, creepy old guy to grey-faced ghoul. I preferred to think the dark side had slowly twisted his body over a lifetime of evil, but nooo.

All in all I can now say, as a lifelong "Star Wars" geek, I'm pretty unimpressed with the prequels as a whole. III was the best of them, but that's like being the most talented musician out of Color Me Badd.

Give me IV-VI any day. Original or Special Editions are fine.. the ones from theaters, not the DVD ones with bloody Hayden Christensen shopped in.

In conclusion, I respectfully request one Mr. George Lucas to kindly locate a stepladder, with which to facilitate his pending jump up my butt.

On a nicer note, fulfilling an order from Her Ladyship the Divine Miss Kris...

1. Total number of films I own on DVD/Video: Too many to count.

2. Last film I bought: Bargain bin raid: "Cannonball Run" and "Tango and Cash."

3.Last film I watched: "Star Wars III" (see above)

4. Five films that I watch a lot, or mean alot to me:

- "Duck Soup"
- "The Goonies"
- "The Thin Man"
- "Back to the Future" (all three)
- "True Stories"

5. Finally, tag five people to do this quiz:

Whoever. I don't really dig this tagging people stuff.

I spent a lovely evening with some new friends last night, and witnessed a near-riot in the LIRR car on the train home.

AIDS Walk tomorrow. Last chance to sponsor me!

I'm going solo, possibly bringing the IR camera. Those of you who have my number, please feel free to harass me during the walk!

Afterward, assuming I'm not too beat from the walk, I'm open to doing stuff in the area. Any suggestions?

As for now, I'm outside doing yardwork all day. Bleh.

Recovery time.

Rob @ 6:01 PM

This past week has been a hell of a ride, too much to blog really. I'm still grokking most of it.

The 2600 meeting was fun, and I finally got to meet the legendary 3rdworm. Pics soon.

I've never had a night quite like the recent one which started as a few minutes of admiring the artwork of a friend-of-a-friend, and culminated in no less than eight solid hours of impulsive explorations in absolutely delightful company. It's very rare indeed I feel so instantly comfortable with someone, it's like we've known each other for ages. Who knows, perhaps we have.

On the flipside, I've been fighting one particular battle for far too long. It's such an old battle that at times it defined me, at others it enslaved me. But, it's not real.

One of my most basic beliefs has long been that nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Therefore, fear is based in illusion.

It's high time I left this illusion behind. I get glimpses of how utterly wonderful things can be.. and I know I can't make that my reality until I free myself from old bindings, debts, and illusions.

Spring = rebirth, new beginnings, and infinite possibilities.

I've got some serious work to do.
