Ancient history

Rob @ 8:03 PM

While this blog started in October 2004, I've actually been blogging since October of 2002. My old blog, which ran back while I was hosted on the original Kracked.com and later Phonelosers.org, took the form of static HTML pages I coded by hand and added to the top of whenever I wanted to "post." "Comments" were emails people sent me, which I pasted into the posts.

I've been re-reading those old posts of mine and think there's actually some mildly interesting stuff in there among all the junk that was floating around in my life back then. So, in the interests of dubious historical value as well as a mild desire to keep things in one place, I'm going to begin importing those old posts into this blog, back-dated to the original posting times and dates. If you're curious, check out the archives dated earlier than October 2004 in the blog's sidebar.

Apologies in advance if it does anything weird to my RSS feed!

I've also been adding some comments here and there to my own old posts as I look back.

EDIT: Well, I did October 2002 through June 2003 all in a row. That was long and boring. The rest will probably get done in shorter bursts.

EDIT EDIT: Just finished out 2003. Weird times.

Today Fina and I went to the hospital to see our sister and brother-in-law (and new proud parents) Jo and Eric.

Everyone's doing great. I got to hold my new nephew for a bit. He is awesome!

I hope I turn out to be a cool uncle.

Welcome to the world, Liam!

End of year memeage

Rob @ 8:17 PM

Swiped from all over the Livejournalosphere:

Look at the posts you've made in the past year, and paste the first line of the first post of each month.

January: Happy Twenty-oh-wait!

February: So this is what being busier than normally allowed by sanity and physics is like.

March: I was recently asked by my lovely friend Mara to record a voice mail greeting for her business.

April: I smiled sadly.

May: Stolen from everyone's Livejournal..

June: Back on May 14, Governor Paterson announced that New York must recognize same-sex marriages which have been performed in Massachusetts, Canada, and other places where it's legal to do so.

July: Ain't It Cool News reports that a complete print of Fritz Lang's Metropolis has turned up in Buenos Aires.

August: A short "best of" from the PLA panel at The Last HOPE has been posted to Youtube. Enjoy ten minutes of universal love and understanding here.

September: I've never properly written up my version of the "where I was/who I lost/how I felt/etc." stories everyone who was around seven years ago has, and I doubt I ever will.

October: Someone is putting on a steampunk version of Shakespeares' Twelfth Night.

November: Her Nickyness has spoiled my epic plans to sneak into Shmoocon 2009, by acquiring a pair of actual tickets for us.

December: Some things Nicky and I did during my trip to Chicago, in randomly nonsensical order

Yep, pretty much.

auto industry fail poster
via BoingBoing, and lots of other places.

Bludstone on wtf_stupid helpfully points out that this bailout is more expensive then the stock of the companies. We are literally giving them more money then they are worth.

In other news, now that Nicky's governor is in prison for being a dumbass, her and I are totally dumbass governor twins.

wonk

Rob @ 7:10 PM

Was a bit sick last week. I was okay enough by Friday night to do the 2600 meeting, which was lots of fun. However, I had just found out before leaving for the meeting that my family had to put our oldest cat, Patty, to sleep. So if I was a bit wonky on Friday, that's why.

This weekend has been spectacularly unproductive. Right after I post this I'm topping that off by watching Hardware, a film I haven't seen since it showed in the last local drive-in theater shortly before it closed down.

What I did on my vacation

Rob @ 10:07 PM

Some things Nicky and I did during my trip to Chicago, in randomly nonsensical order:

  • I tried Giordano's stuffed pizza. IT MAKES YOU DEAD OF DELICIOUS.
  • I met Foofy Attorney, who is 31 flavors of awesome, and had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with his family.
  • I was dragged to a dive bar to sing Karaoke for the first time ever. My songs were "Nowhere Man" (I love the Yellow Submarine film,) "Johnny B. Goode" (a bit of Back to the Future geekery, though I suspect my "this is an oldie where I come from" schtick was lost on that crowd) and "Never Gonna Give You Up" done in my best Kermit the Frog Rick Astley voice.
  • I ate a McDonalds hamburger and drank Coca-cola whilst sitting across from Wrigley Field, possibly the most obnoxiously American thing I've ever done.
  • We went to the Museum of Science and Industry, where we dissected cow eyeballs, watched robots build us spinning tops with our screennames on them, and posed for photo ops inside a jet engine.
  • We caught up with Vixen and ate chicken fingers.
  • I bought a pile of secondhand books including some Marx Brothers stuff, a photocopied "Using Your Telephone Persuasion Skills" manual complete with some seminar attendee's notes in the margins (I'll have to scan this for you folks, it's wacky,) and a stack of old Mad Magazine paperbacks from the 1960s-70s.
  • I rode the El Train around the Chicago Loop, just like Spider-Man and Doc Ock did in that movie set in New York City.
  • I bought a telescoping fork. A TELESCOPING FORK!
  • We played with Legos in a coffee shop, and I made a PC with a Blue Screen of Death.
  • Danced with Nicky in public at random moments, sometimes with music, sometimes without.
  • We joined a pair of Nicky's friends for a really neat board game night.
  • We watched lots of Beavis and Butt-Head and UHF.
  • We ate at a restaurant called Medici which encourages people to write on the walls; I added considerably to the graffiti. I also discovered a prohibition sign in my onion rings.
  • I went to Millennium Park and watched ice skaters, and also checked out the Bean sculpture, which is actually pretty damn neat.
  • Most importantly of all, I spent some quality time with my special lady friend. <3
  • Nicky's got some photos from our days together riiight about here.
