Amazon fail

Rob @ 12:53 PM seems to suddenly disapprove of gay things, removing the sales rankings from certain gay books whilst leaving their heterosexual counterparts alone.

For those unfamiliar with, they're that company who named themselves after a legendary race of isolated, cohabitating warrior women.

ETA: Neil Gaiman weighs in on the situation.

    i don't know what to believe...there's a decent chance that it's an internal thing, but at least one guy is claiming respoinsibility for hacking it, and at least one guy from LJsuspected it.

    either way, it shows why sales rankings are a bad idea, or at least need to be watched like a hawk. either someone inside is going to find a way to screw it up, or someone outside will.

    @nicky: Curiouser and curiouser. Even if it totally isn't an internal thing, though, Amazon owes everyone a repair and an apology. Neither of those have as yet appeared.

  3. Brewster says:

    Actually, it has a large internal component. Weev is talking nonsense. Apparently Amazon is working on the repair bit (some improvements have been seen), but its PR department seems to be knocked for a loop. No apologies; only explanation is "it's a glitch, we're fixing it". Except there's some speculation that the "glitch" originated in some less-than-equitable ways that Amazon was *already* treating its content before the #amazonfail went down.

    Heh, he said "cohabitating"...

    @Brewster: good find.

    @Rob: agreed. it's crazy that Amazon hasn't made a statement on this yet.

    Off topic but related, check out the "Customer Who Viewed this Item Also Viewed," "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought," "Tags Customers Associate with This Product," "Listmania!," and "So You'd Like to..." for this Disposable Helium Tank.

    Interesting set of values Amazon has there... ;)

    As the economy fails, the PR department will go in the shitter for corporations. That or the people from Sony Europe PR have found new jobs.

  8. Cyrus says:

    Well, judging from the last Off The Hook show, I don't think this is an isolated incident. Though it would be nice of Amazon to fully fess up, imo.

    Did you see the latest MPAA/RIAA fail yet, via the Pirate Bay?
