More IR

Enamon, Fina, and I took a walk around today, and played with my infrared-modded cam in the daylight, where it works much better. I’ve uploaded the resulting pics to my infrared flickr set.

Here are some samples…

Fina and Enamon, both of whom are dressed in dark clothes.

Bright trees and dark sky.

Me, dressed in a maroon shirt and black vest.

Coca cola is all but transparent to IR.

That is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’ve read up on it, but haven’t seen any real world pics. You’ve insipried me to do this immediatly.

Now that I think about it, Enamon’s hair is dark brown. His jacket is black. Yet his hair still remains dark in the IR photo while his jacket (or sweatshirt or whatever) looks white or, at the very least, a very light colour. This is a good example of the fact that colour is not an inherent trait of an object but rather a property of the spectrum of light that is reflected and/or refracted though/by the composing parts of the object. Thus the material from which Enamon’s sweatshirt is made does not reflect the dark part of the IR spectrum while his dark hair does. Coca Cola’s chemical composition, on the other hand, lets light through it (as is seen in the picture) thus not reflecting the part of the IR spectrum that is recieved by the camera. Well… It’s not exactly 100% transparent but it’s quite translucent.

It’s not a matter of reflecting a “dark” part of the IR spectrum, it’s a matter of his hair absorbing rather than reflecting IR. Additionally the coke, while absorbent to most visible light, is transparent to IR. In these photos visible light is blocked out, what you’re seeing is the absorption or reflection of light behind visible red.
