Runaway Meme…

After this song came up in my random playlist, I was inspired to create a small tribute to the world’s tragically lost Internet memes.

Once both the sound and the image have loaded completely, hit “refresh” or “go” on your browser to synchronize it.

Familiarity with well-meaning early 90s light rock and the weirder things to come out of the Net in the past decade or so are helpful.

Happy Thanksgiving where applicable!

Here’s a post in a friend’s blog that is well worth a read in its entriety.

There’s a lot I’m grateful for in this world, and that includes all you people who actually read the blather I post, here and elsewhere.

Thank you!

Mashup roundup

Here are a few mashups/bootlegs/bastardizations I’m enjoying immensely just now..

Challaback Girl - this frail white girl from California has been Hindu, Japanese, and gangsta.. why not Jewish? djBC keeps Gwen Kosher.

Q Unit - Queen meets 50 Cent, makes 50 Cent actually listenable. A full-length album of goodness.

Jesus Walked Back and He’s Black - Kanye West and AC/DC.

The Ciccones - The Immaculate Concoction - Full album of Madonna vs everyone.

Burn Your Radio - Public Enemy meets Queen, with other good stuff layered in.

Supercalibreakz - Supercalifragilistic(etc.) layed over “Rolling” by Shy FX, fun in that way only bastardized D_sney can be.

Come Undone vs Soldier - Duran Duran can even make Destiny’s Child listenable.

For much more, check out GYBO!

Speaking of GYBO, there’s an awesome and huge video file going around - the Club GYBO Plan B mix by Thriftshop XL - lots of video-mashes, remixed video and audio re-remixed together, and just plain video insanity in a non-stop 45-minute-long mix. Seriously awesome, check it out of you have the bandwidth and disk space to handle a 133 meg WMV file.

Dear readers, if I may humbly direct you to..

Awkward Hand Turkey Theatre.

Be sure to check out the archives. Genius!!

I sent the author a fan mail, and he replied that it was his first one. I’m sure it was only the first of many.

Words of wisdom from the wonderful Babs

But overall, life is good. There’s always something to smile over, to laugh about…(and when there isn’t something overt, damn it, I’m going to make something to laugh over). I feel down too, sometimes, but that’s to be expected. Life isn’t even; it’s more like an averaging. ;) And as long as my average comes out in the normal range, I’m grateful.

Hee…

A recent post by Paul has reminded me how much I love it when people fail at spamming.

For example, sometimes the spammers misconfigure their mail scripts so instead of filling in a name to appear legit, the message literally says “Hey %NAME%, check this out!”

Yep, I’ll be sure to check that out, %KNOB%…

There are also the ones that actually advertise spamming tools or spammable email lists. They spam people, pissing almost all of them off with senseless and time-consuming spam, in hopes that they will then want to pay you to help them do the same thing to other people.

This is pretty much like going up to some guy on the street, belting him across the face with a curtain rod, and then offering to sell him a bunch of curtain rods with which to belt everyone else on said street. I can’t really see this particular business model doing all that well.

A personal favorite of mine is when people try to intimidate me by posing as an admin at one of my own domains. I know this could fool a newbie who doesn’t own their domain, but it’s just silly when I’m threatened by “webmaster@robvincent.net” with messages like “WARNING you are unporctected and will lose of your online connection unless you run of attached file” which is of course a virus.

I’d like to think if I were going to start threatening myself, I’d at least do it in clearly written sentences, and with a bit more style.

You really have to feel sorry for someone who fails at being a spammer, nearly the lowest form of life on the Internet. There’s just not much further to fall.

Responsibility

I had a whole bunch of stuff to get done today, so of course I blew most of it off and started a an LJ board about my hometown.

I’m waiting on my sister Fina for the Halloween pics, those of you who know her please harass her for me. I have no power here. Until then, I only have a few pics from my crappy camphone, which I’ve posted riiight about here. At least you can dig my snazzy “More Cowbell” getup and the fact that yes, I really did bleach my facial hair for a costume…

I also found a couple of other people’s parade photos I turned up in.. here and here.

Braaaaains…

An LJ post by author Kate Orman has reminded me of a nerdy cereal tradition I used to have when I ran out of Raisin Bran… I used to cut out the “in” from “Raisin” on the empty box, paste it over the “N” in “Bran” on the new box, and enjoy another week of delicious “Raisin Brain” for breakfast.

31 Question Meme

Yoinked from Katie

1. Name someone with the same birthday as you.
Wallace Shawn, Grace Kelly, and Tonya Harding, all three of whom I’m a big fan of.

2. Where was your first kiss?
Just outside Union Station, Washington, DC.

3. Have you ever seriously vandalized someone else’s property?
Yes. No further comment.

4. Have you ever hit someone of the opposite sex?
Not beyond fighting with sisters as a kid.

5. Have you ever sung in front of a large number of people?
Now and then. I’m not too bad at it, if I do say so myself.

6. What’s the first thing you notice about the preferred sex?
Eyes, lips, smile.

7. What really turns you on?
Shared laughter.

8. What do you order at Starbucks?
A bottle of Pellegrino water.

9. What is your biggest mistake?
Every time I thought I made huge mistakes, they later turned out to have had extremely good reasons for happening, important lessons to teach, etc. So I’ll say none.

10. Ever hurt yourself on purpose?
Yes.

11. Say something totally random about you.
I’m currently designing three tattoos for myself, no idea when I’ll be able to get them done though..

12. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity?
When I had long, stringy hair, I was often told I looked like Jack Black. Nowadays I’m often called Frank DeCaro or Dave Attell.

13. Do you still watch kiddy movies or tv shows?
Of course. When I watch TV it’s almost always Cartoon Network, and kids still get some of the best movies out there. “Sesame Street” totally jumped the shark with Elmo though, I detest him and can barely watch it anymore.

14. Did you have braces?
Never.

15. Are you comfortable with your height?
Sure. I can reach the stuff I need to, and my legs reach all the way to the ground.

16. What is the most romantic thing someone of the preferred sex has done for you?
Gave me her old PC. Yes, I’m a nerd, and so was she.

17. When do you know it’s love?
When you can truly relax around one another… so much so that you can fart in each other’s company.

18. Do you speak any other languages?
My Spanish is just this side of not very good, but I understand a lot more than I speak. I also try to learn greetings and swear words in as many languages as possible.

19. Have you ever been to a tanning salon?
No, even if I weren’t a swarthy Italian who keeps his Summer tan until around March I wouldn’t go anywhere near them. Skin cancer is teh s uck, and so are women in their 30s with skin like old shoes.

20. What magazines do you read?
I’ll flip through nearly anything if it’s around, with preference for science, tech, humor, spiritual, art, and PC mags. Some titles I buy regularly are 2600, Adbusters, Popular Science, Cinefex, and Doctor Who Magazine. I used to be a big fan of Mad before they started filling the mag with ads, and I sorely miss National Lampoon.

21. Have you ever ridden in a limo?
Once, but it was for a funeral, so I didn’t really take notice of the experience.

22. Has anyone you were really close with passed away?
Many.

23. Do you watch MTV?
Rarely.

24. What’s something that really annoys you?
MTV.

25. What’s something you really like?
Making people laugh and/or think.

26. Do you like Michael Jackson?
I really dig a lot of the music he’s done, but can’t say I’m much a fan of him as a person anymore. I used to be, up to and including the “Bad” album.. and I still really miss the 1980s Michael from the “Thriller” days. He seemed so carefree and happy back then.. you can’t watch the “Thriller” video without feeling like there’s someone who’s having fun with his work. Nowadays he’s like one of those nervously twitching little hairless dogs you don’t want to get too close to, and his last few albums have mostly sucked on toast.

27. Can you dance?
Yes, but I don’t often in public unless I’m trying to amuse someone. I also took about six yers of ballet, tap, and jazz classes as a kid, and want to get into ballroom dancing someday.

28. What’s the latest you have ever stayed up?
All night, like I’m doing right now.

29. Have you ever thought that you were honestly going to die?
Can’t say that I have. I usually expect things to work out for the better, and I haven’t been wrong yet.

30. Have you ever been rushed by an ambulance into the emergency room?
Not by ambulance, but my mom did ruch me to the emergency room a few times when I was a kid.

31. Do you actually read these when other people fill them out?
Usually.
